History of the Village

On its way out of the Pierre-Lys gorge, the river Aude separates Belvianes (on the left bank) from Cavirac (on the right bank). Belvianes and Cavirac's names are believed to have a Gallo-Roman origin, possibly related to a Roman family called "Balbius". It is known that Belvianes and Cavirac came under the control of the King of France at the end of the 14th century.

In 1833 the communes of Belvianes and of Cavirac joined together to become Belvianes-et-Cavirac.

Church Saint-Jacques

It is thought that this building was constructed in the 11th Century. It is dedicated to St-Jacques-Le-Majeur who was the head of the nearby monastery of the Joucou, which is now extinct. The church is a national monument due to the classified altar and one tapestry.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the priest Félix Armand, based at St-Martin-Lys was responsible for opening the road through the "défilé de la Pierre-Lys", and thus Belvianes and Cavirac were finally given opportunities to trade with Roussillon and Spain.

For a long time, the Forêt de Fanges has been a source of income to the community, who exploited beech-tree, fir, and spruce essence.

Today the commune has 332 inhabitants.

The great French writer Gaston Bonheur (1913 - 1980) was born here.
